There’s no question that this season of The Vampire Diaries is a game-changer. With Elena in transition to become the one thing she never wanted to become, we’ll finally get to see a different side to our protagonist.
We pick up just as Elena is coming to the frightening realization that she’s dead. Stefan tries to comfort her while Damon… well, he’s just trying to be realistic. Stefan assures Elena that Bonnie is trying to come up with something – anything – to help her become human again. Damon has little faith in this plan and takes to the bottle. He blames Stefan for not saving Elena and it’s clear Stefan blames himself too. Meanwhile, Elena is upstairs comforting her brother and adjusting to the strange new quirks that come along with being a vampire.
Klaus, or “Tyler” as we’ll call him, realizes his body wasn’t destroyed and wants Bonnie to put him back in it. She insists she can’t do it right now because of everything going on with Elena. Despite being angry, Klaus concedes, but it’s clear he’ll be back for his body later. Some town pastor we’ve never ever seen before shows up at the hospital to inform Meredith she’s been fired, and both the mayor and the sheriff have been arrested and stripped of their duties, all thanks to Alaric’s confession to the council. They also took all the vervain in Mystic Falls, including the huge stash at the Salvatore house. Matt’s getting ready to leave the hospital (remember guys, he was in a car accident too) and Caroline is crying in his arms over Tyler’s death. But Matt is so beyond himself in guilt for Elena’s death that it’s hard for him to concentrate on anything else.
